ARTICLE: Knitters save endangered penguins' lives

It was my birthday this past weekend, so I apologize for my blog being rather quiet.

I did come across this article today though that may interest you:

Knitters save endangered penguins' lives
April 7, 2006

A worldwide army of little old ladies has found some far more appreciative recipients than grandchildren for their handknitted woollen jumpers.

Their loving efforts to help sick little penguins off the southern coast of Australia have given new meaning to the term penguin suit.

You can read the rest of the article here.

Here's a picture I found online of the little penguins wearing their jumpers. Awfully cute!

Grow Sock Grow!

As you can see, my sock has grown. The leg/cuff is done (that's the lengthy tube). The back of the ankle is the part at the end towards the right hand side that has different stitching. The different stitching is to mak ethe back of the ankle more durrable since that is a spot that naturally wears out on socks.

The heel turned out well! Right now I am working on the part wear my foot would go.

So exciting to see it coming along so nicely!

ARTICLE: Picking up the needles

Today while browsing through news headlines this story caught my eye:

Picking up the needles
Why more and more guys are learning to knit

EXCERPT
"Last fall, Elgin Phelps settled in for a good long wait at an auto shop.

But the retired lawyer didn't just twiddle his thumbs while his car was on the hoists. Instead, kept all of his fingers busy: He knitted.

The mechanic emerged to deliver the bad news. But he screeched to a halt once he saw his customer's busy hands manipulating the needles and yarn.

"He said: 'Oh, you're knitting!' " recalls Phelps."

First Pair of Socks

I am currently working on my first pair of socks. The yarn I chose is 100% Merino Wool by Koigu Wool. The specific yarn is part of the KPPPM series. The yarn is actually handpainted. It is very pretty. I chose this yarn because it was soft, so I could wear it without having itchy feet and it is thin, so I could wear them outside of the house as well.

Knitting using 4 needles really isn't as complicated as it seems. Starting is a little bit awkward initially as the needles are very tiny, but once you get going no problem. It is also amazing to know that your foot will actually fit in these once they are done as the opening looks rather small, but as we all know, yarn stretches.

As you can see I am only at the beginning of the sock. It will be about midcalf length when it is done.

I also quite like bamboo needles. I find they aren't as slippery as metal or plastic ones. (Granted as these ones are so small it's almost like working with big toothpicks!)

I also started a pair of baby socks. They are SUPER tiny but they'll be really cute when they're done!

Addicted to knitting?

I cannot lie. This is a sales pitch. Kinda.

I have these really cute tshirts. All about the love of knitting, being addicted to knitting, showing off your love of knitting and how you just can't get enough yarn to support your habit.

I am hoping that you'll help me support my yarn addiction and show off your own addiction by buying and wearing one of my cute shirts that Joan did such a great job designing for me.

This shirt is one of my favourites. Ok again, I cannot lie, I love them all.

Check them out here. If you like them then I encourage you to buy one. Or have someone buy one for you! Even if you don't knit, you should consider buying one to support knitters.

Ok. I'm done now. Happy knitting, crocheting and everything inbetween!

Baby Blanket Done!

Finished one striped baby blanket this week for Nancy. She needs a second one as well. That one is for her sister-in-law's baby due at the beginning of April. It'll be same idea - striped.

I will post pictures soon.
