"Last fall, Elgin Phelps settled in for a good long wait at an auto shop.

But the retired lawyer didn't just twiddle his thumbs while his car was on the hoists. Instead, kept all of his fingers busy: He knitted.

The mechanic emerged to deliver the bad news. But he screeched to a halt once he saw his customer's busy hands manipulating the needles and yarn.

"He said: 'Oh, you're knitting!' " recalls Phelps."
